The 40th anniversary of Hurricane Camille’s impact on
Nelson
County will be the focus of a program of remembrance at Nelson County High School Auditorium on Thursday, Aug. 20, beginning at 7 p.m. with a slide show of rarely seen photographs of the storm’s effects, followed by music by The Fortune Family.
Moderated by Hughes Swain, who was a county extension agent when Camille occurred, the program will include talks by two survivors of the 1969 flood, which killed at least 124 people when more than two feet of rain fell on parts of the county within a nine-hour period. Colleen Stevens Thompson, who was swept three-and-a-half miles down Muddy Creek and lost one of her three children to the flood, will talk about her experience and the heroism of Buzz Thompson, who saved her son but lost his own life. Curtis Matthews, who lived just south of Woods Mill where Muddy Creek and Davis Creek flow together, and who lost his home, will recount his experiences during the flood as well. Cliff Wood, who was a member of the Board of Supervisors at the time of Camille and coordinated the county’s response to the disaster, will talk about how individuals responded to the crisis. The Rev. John Gordon, who was minister of
Calvary
Baptist
Church in Lovingston when Camille occurred, will read the names of those who lost their lives. Allen Hale, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, will read a proclamation passed by the board honoring those who lost their lives and contributed to the rescue and recovery effort. Survivors of the flood and rescue and recovery workers will be recognized. Pat Ritchie will perform her song “Nelson County Flood.”
